Description
The British LibraryCharming cards reproducing four airy designs of butterflies for Victorian greetings cards, featured in the December supplement of 'The Queen, The Lady’s Newspaper and Court Chronicle', 1878; the British magazine which went on to become part of ‘Harper’s Bazaar’ in the mid-20th century. A popular motif of the era in jewellery and fashion, butterflies’ fleeting beauty were associated with the soul in Victorian symbolism. Capturing tufts of grass, cornflowers, poppies and oats, the cards reflect the soft print quality of the original lithographs.
