Description
Take the High and Low roads with a puzzling a tour of Scotland with a delightful jigsaw puzzle which reproduces a pictorial map of mainland Scotland and the Hebrides from 1931, now in the collection of the National Library of Scotland. Reproducing 'Pratts High Test Plan of Scotland', the map was originally published by Pratts Oil (known as Standard Oil in the USA, and, a few months later, as Esso in the UK). Oil companies were popular sponsors for commissioned guidebooks in the 1930s-50s, when the number of privately-owned motor cars and popularity of touring holidays was on the rise. The delightful map was illustrated by acclaimed cartographer and artist Alfred Edward Taylor (1869-1945); it includes dozens of vignettes of Scottish places – from cities and lochs to mountains and castles – plus people, animals and quotations from Sir Walter Scott, James Boswell and Robert Burns. Produced by Scottish publisher Birlinn.
