Description
Victoria and Albert Museum

An exotic jigsaw puzzle reproducing a lithograph of hummingbirds – ‘Trochilidae. – Kolibros.’ - from ‘Kunstformen der Natur’ (‘Art Forms in Nature’), the influential zoological work by German naturalist Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919). Haeckel’s original introduction to the plate, number 99, noted ‘the most unique aesthetic charm and poetic glorification of the small hummingbirds is bestowed on them with the confluence of its delicate body shape, magnificent feathering and the exceptional grace and velocity of the movements as well as the intimate relation to the equally beautiful flowers that give them life’. Originally published 1899-1904, the jigsaw puzzle reproduces an edition now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The puzzle is made from FSC accredited paper and board as part of a sustainable jigsaw range with reduced plastic content; the plastic bag holding the puzzle pieces can be recycled.
