Description
Rich and refined Christmas cards reproducing six decorative details from 14th and 15th century illuminated manuscripts. Depicting the Annunciation, the Madonna and Child, the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, the exquisite work of master illuminators represent key moments in the Christmas story which are sure to delight and inspire your loved ones this Christmas. Called historiated initials, the cards mix details from miniature scenes set within the illuminated lettering of the very finest manuscripts; such as those setting out liturgical texts and music, including medieval missals, antiphonaries and graduals. Includes an initial E depicting The Adoration of the Magi, c.1470s, by Franco dei Russi (active 1453-82); an initial S with the Madonna & Child, c.1450s, attributed to Master of the Franciscan Breviary (active c.1440-60); and the letter R decorated with The Annunciation, from an Upper Rhenish Gradual, c.1300. Drawing on originals in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the J. Paul Getty Museum, California.
