A handsome collection of cards reproducing celestial illustrations from ‘Atlas Coelestis’, published 1660. Now in the collection of the Library, the celestial atlas was one of the most ornate ever produced and was the masterpiece of Dutch-German cartographer and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (c.1596-1665). Images comprise illustrations for 'The Universe, with a Zodiac Sphere', 'Planisphere with Astrological Signs of the Zodiac', ‘The Constellations, with Astrological Signs of the Zodiac’, and ‘The Copernican System’. Illustrating cosmological theories and contemporary understanding of the constellations, the work is admired for its artistry and visual depictions of scientific theory.
