10 Vernon Ward Victorian Scene Cards

Delightful greetings cards reproducing charming Victorian park scenes in paintings by Hampstead-artist Vernon Ward (1905-85). Known for his naturalistic and historical-subjects, Ward produced a series of late-19th century scenes for Royle Publications, a leading post-war British greetings card company. Images comprise ‘Springtime in the Park’ and ‘In Passing, 1865’. The fashionable park settings reflect the Victorian passion for public gardens; once described as ‘the lungs of the city’ by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead (1822-1903). From spaces to promenades to duck ponds, boating lakes and band stands, the 19th century witnessed civic pride and urban escape in city parks across Britain, notably Liverpool’s Sefton Park and Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham. Any fan of Victorian park aesthetics will be delighted to receive these pretty cards.
