10 Rossetti a Christmas Carol Cards

Sumptuous Christmas cards reproducing Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s (1828-82) richly-coloured painting, ‘A Christmas Carol’, 1867. The original painting’s frame included a text beneath the image which read: ‘Here a maid, well-apparelled, sings a song of Christ's birth with the tune of Bululalow: "Jesus Christus hodie Natus est de Virgine"’. The image includes a festive sprig of holly and a detail, in the background, of a heart-shaped icon of the Virgin and Child. Rossetti was part of the radical Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of the 1840s-50s, but his later paintings were a powerful influence upon both the Arts and Crafts and Symbolist movements in subsequent years.
