10 Memling Christmas Cards

Christmas cards with intricate die-cutting, reproducing a spellbinding detail of 'The Seven Joys of the Virgin', 1480, by German-Flemish painter Hans Memling (c.1430-94). Focusing on a scene of the Adoration of the Magi, the cards also include intricate scenes from the Holy Story, including the Annunciation, the Annunciation to the Shepherds, and the Nativity; the background also includes the departure of the Magi, the tragic Massacre of the Innocents and, as a distant detail behind the shepherds, the Flight into Egypt, in which the Holy Family escape. This detail captures around two thirds of the larger painting; in the full-size image Memling includes the seven traditional ‘joys’ associated with the life of the Virgin Mary but also wider New Testament scenes, totalling some 25 vignettes across the entire painting. A fascinating and richly detailed card encompassing the Christmas Story.
