A wall calendar exploring the elegant pastimes and interests of late Meiji-era beauties in art by Japanese painter and print maker Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908). Born in the Kanda district of Tokyo, Toshikata studied with ukiyo-e master Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92) and was later named the artist’s official successor. A prolific printmaker, Toshikata produced paintings and prints for newspapers, literary magazines and book covers. Featuring twelve delicate colour prints from ‘Ima Yo Bijin’, meaning ‘Beauties in a Modern Era’, an album published in 1898 featuring a series of seasonal views, now in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Capturing elegant ladies gardening, visiting and celebrating festivals, the prints reflect the twelve months of the year. Includes 'Snow Viewing', 'Horticultural Display', 'Irises', 'Cascading Wisteria', and 'Garden Party'.
