Illustrated with exquisite botanical studies by Christian Gottlieb Geissler (1729–1814), a German-Swiss botanical artist, which he produced for ‘Tabulae phytographicae’, a masterpiece work by Johannes Gessner (1709–1790). Published 1795-1804, the book presented 64 hand-coloured engravings by Geissler to explain the relationship of plants within the same classification according to Carl Linnaeus’s (1707-78) taxonomical system. Arranging plants and flowers in groupings, reflecting the number of stamens, richly coloured illustrations include details from the plates for Diandra, Decandria, and Pentandria classes, and more. Capturing in rich and meticulous detail, the illustrations mix dianthus, lychnis, dianthus, echium, lycopsis and Arum lilies in their groupings. Presented on uncoated matt paper and with a tactile art paper binding, colourful illustrations capture the spectacular colours and forms of a vast variety of flowers and foliage. A perfect companion for any lover of flowers and botanical history.
