Published in 1611, ‘The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain’ was the first attempt to chart the British Isles as a large-scale atlas; an immediate success, the work was reprinted in many editions. Arguably England’s greatest cartographer, Speed employed the latest sources to create the most accurate maps of their time; he elevated mapping to an art, with the inclusion of decorative details, borders and town plans that have made the maps especially prized.
