Cockerel Weather Vane

Weathervanes are believed to have been invented by the Greek astronomer Andronicus in 48 B.C, developing over time they became more ornamental and this charming black powder-coated mild steel design recalls early 20th century examples. In Britain it was common practice to tie strings or cloth to the tops of buildings to see which way the wind was blowing. Later, banners became a popular ornament, from which 'vane' is derived from the Old English 'fana' meaning banner or flag. The common practice of adding a cockerel stemmed from the 9th century papal decree that churches should display the bird on their steeples or domes as a symbol of St Peter. Church weathervanes were decorated with the cockerel and the motif was then widely adopted. This weathervane can be attached to a post, finial or other structure with minimal assembly, although the fixings to attach to your location are not supplied.
