Description
A cotton tea towel to celebrate the can-do and campaigning heritage of the Women’s Institute. Formed in Anglesey in 1915, the W.I. is, today, the largest women’s voluntary service in the UK. With its roots in the campaigns for women’s suffrage, the tea towel depicts a series of campaigning characters by contemporary British artist Alison Gardiner. From pensions for spinsters in the years after the First World War; the resolution adopted in 1943 for ‘equal pay for equal work’; ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaigns in the 1950s and 60s; resolutions condemning violence against women in 1975; to the ‘SOS for Honey Bees’ campaign in 2009: the W.I. has long-been ahead of its time. The image is screen-printed and hand-finished; created in one of Lancashire's traditional mill towns, which has been producing cotton since the Industrial Revolution.
