Murano Necklace

Multi-coloured Murano glass bead necklace reflecting the continuing tradition of glass blowing on the Venetian islands. Murano's reputation as a centre for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city's mostly wood buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. Venetian glass blowers learnt new techniques from pieces arriving from the East to this busy trading centre and reflecting the spirit of the Renaissance ancient techniques were rediscovered. By the 16th century the Roman technique of fusing metal leaf with glass was used not only for beads but elaborate glass vessels. Handmade by highly skilled artisans, this Murano glass necklace combines centuries old craftsmanship with a stylish and wearable design.
