Description
Striking top decorated with details from ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I’, 1903-07, the final and most representative work of Gustav Klimt’s (1862–1918) Golden Phase. Known for his use of shimmering gold backgrounds, Klimt was inspired to use this medium after a journey to Italy in 1903 after viewing the Byzantine mosaics in the Church of San Vitale. The painting was famously stolen by the Nazis in 1941, one of many Jewish-owned paintings that were taken during this period. It was finally returned to the family in 2006 to be later sold and now hangs in the Neue Galerie, New York. This top is decorated with a print in bronze and gold that is contrasted with solid black panels, one at the front and one on the reverse. Finished with side pockets.
