Whittling Walking Sticks

Start with a thumb stick and then work through to carving any of 10 creature-inspired walking stick-toppers. Create a tactile otter or duck; an attention-grabbing dog or frog; an exotic cheetah or polar bear; or a regal eagle or kingfisher. You can, of course, adapt the designs as you wish. Full of hints and tips from acclaimed British woodcarver Peter Benson (b.1937); carvings can be made using a pen-knife and gouges but additional tools, such as a band-saw and vice, will be needed for construction.
