Description
A fascinating photographic survey which celebrates the joy, relief and gratitude associated with Allied victory and the end of the Second World War. Over 100 photographs from the Mirrorpix archive with short captions chart the end of hostilities in Europe on VE Day on 8th May, and then VJ Day on 15th August 1945. Mixing poignant and joy-filled images: French political prisoners liberated by US First Army troops; returning British POWs greeted by a policeman at Marylebone station; a street party in Newton Heath, Manchester; flags and bunting being prepared in Coventry; and jubilant nurses in Liverpool. Evocative chapters explore celebrations, rebuilding Britain and commemoration; including Pre-fabs on the Isle of Dogs in 1946; children playing in a deserted airfield in 1947; to commemorations of VJ Day in Middlesbrough in 1995 and VE Day in Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in 2015. With the 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day in 2025, this moving selection of images celebrates the Greatest Generation in a timeless tribute.
