A republished mystery from 1936, ‘The Wheel Spins’ was adapted for the acclaimed cinematic thriller, ‘The Lady Vanishes’, directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), released in 1938.
Iris Carr is returning to England from a walking holiday in a remote region of Europe. Travelling alone, she suffers from sunstroke prior to her train’s departure for Trieste and, feeling unwell, is befriended by a tweedy English governess, Miss Froy. Overcome by weariness, Iris falls asleep aboard the train. When she awakes, there is no sign of Miss Froy and no-one recalls having ever seen her. Recruiting the help of a British engineer, Max Hare, can they work together to find Miss Froy? Was Iris simply imagining the governess in her daze? Or is there a darker reason for the passengers’ conspiracy of silence, as the train rattles its eccentric collection of passengers deeper into confusion? A comedic and thrilling mystery by Ethel Lina White (1876-1944), the Abergavenny-born author whose books were highly sought after in the 1930s and 40s.
