When the body of a coupon-racketeer washes up on the banks of the River Lune, Chief Inspector Macdonald is drawn into a confounding Lancashire mystery. Set in the Fells across a rainy September, Macdonald must work out just who would break into a nearby cottage to steal salmon fishing line, a sack and two fire dogs. Did the break-in have anything to do with the dead body? Was the theft associated with a murky disagreement over fishing rights? A cunning, character-filled mystery mixing farmers, artists, fishing and a few red herrings. First published in 1946, a republished tale by the revered and prolific E.C.R. Lorac, penname of Edith Caroline Rivett (1894-1958).
