Description
A timely new edition of the authoritative book, first published in 2004 and now updated for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, on 6th June 1944. Discover the background and development of the plan for Operation Overlord, followed by a day-by-day account of sea and air assault on the Normandy beaches, and weeks of tough fighting through the French ‘bocage’. Focused upon over 70 colour maps, many specially commissioned for the book but also based upon the original maps used on the day, the book gives a vivid insight into the gruelling and overwhelming nature of battle. Updated with the latest archival research, chapters include contemporary black-and-white photographs and useful diagrams; plus expert text explores the German defences, the disposition of French resistance fighters as well as the Allied assault. A fascinating view of the D-Day landings, from the beaches to the fight to control the Normandy countryside as well as the logistical feats accomplished and sheer bravery of the combatants.
