The British Library
An evocative, British mystery from the golden age of crime writing.
When Sir Richard March gathers his grandchildren at Swanswater Manor in Kent he apparently tires of their boisterous company, looking set to disinherit his heirs in a new will. When March is discovered dead from strychnine poisoning, Inspector Cockrill is faced with an ‘impossible’ crime where none of the obvious suspects could have committed the foul deed. While staying away from Blitz-battered London the family, instead, find death stalking the country manor’s halls; Cockrill must evade cunning misdirection and survive a thrilling climax to the case. First published in 1947, a republished tale by Christianna Brand, the penname of Mary Christianna Milne (1907-88).
