Description
The British Library
A carefully selected collection of 16 bookish mysteries from the collection of the Library, spanning 1933-73. Termed ‘bibliomysteries’ by Otto Penzler (b.1942), the stories mix bookshops, libraries, resentful writers, unscrupulous publishers and pompous playwrights in rarely published short stories, including great names of the Golden Age of British mystery writing. With a new introduction and contextual notes, the book includes ‘Trent and the Ministering Angel’, 1938, by E.C. Bentley (1875-1956); ‘A Savage Game’, 1950, by A.A. Milne (1882-1956), who while writing ‘Winnie the Pooh’ was also a founding member of the Detection Club; ‘The Clue in the Book’, 1952, by Julian Symons (1912-94); ‘A Man and his Mother-in-law’, 1953, by Roy Vickers (1889-1965); and ‘The Manuscript’, 1953, by Gladys Mitchell. Plus stories by Michael Innes (1906-94), Christianna Brand (1907-88), John Creasey (1908-73), and more. A gripping mix of suspense and literary red herrings to delight any book-lover.
