A visual compendium of over 120 canine characters in a charming mix of photographs, antiquarian postcards, stereoscope viewing cards, advertising ephemera, press stills, and more; all drawn from the archive of the world’s oldest kennel club, founded in 1873. Themed chapters illustrate the British love of dogs: from Victorian visiting cards which proudly included the owner’s pet, and prize-winning English Springer Spaniel puppies pictured in a silver trophy from the 1934 Blackpool Championship Dog Show; to trench companions for soldiers of the First World War, silent movie stars posing with their Borzois, and showing English Setters in 1970. Dog lover’s will delight in a mix of poignant, humorous and behind-the-scenes images celebrating over a century of canine companionship. With short contextual captions and a Foreword by Clare Balding (b.1971), the collection makes a charming gift or treat for a dog lover.
